In this article we will discuss about the ubiquitous term 802.11b/g/n that you always wanted to know. Most notebooks that you use species in the specification that it supports 802.11b/g/n wifi connectivity. So what is the difference between the 802.11b , 802.11g and 802.11n ?

We have in general better range and higher data rate as we move from 802.11b to 802.11g to 802.11n. The table below summarises the difference between the 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n.

Table : 802.11b Vs 802.11g Vs 802.11n

Item 802.11b 802.11g
Indoor Range Approximate 125 ft 125 ft 230 ft
Data Rate (Mbits/sec) – Max 11 54 150
Freq of operation 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz

Notice that the first thing that you need to look at is your router. Check if your router supports 802.11n. If it does not, then your notebook will not be working on 802.11n even if it has the cabability. If your router supports only 802.11b and your notebook work on 802.11n, then the whole link will work only on 802.11b and note 802.11n. In other words, you will not be able to take advantage of the higher data rate and longer range of 802.11n
