The AMD Phenom ii X2 N640 is a dual core processor intended for high performance mobile computing. Clocked at 2.9 GHz, the Phenom ii N640, has 2 MB of level 2 Cache. The absence of Level 3 cache leads to somewhat degraded performance for the Phenom ii N640.

The Phenom ii N640 bumps up the frequency of N620 processor by 100 MHz which is clocked at 2.8 GHz. Since the bump in the frequency is only 3.5 % we can expect an improvement in the performance of the order of 3%.

We expect the performance of the Phenom ii N640 processor to be similar to similarly clocked Intel core 2 processors, but less than that of the similarly clocked Intel core i3 processors.

The Phenom ii N640 processors have integrated DDR3 memory controller which reduces the memory latency and increases the overall performance of the processor. The enhanned performance and low cost of the Phenom ii N640 makes it competitive against the intel core 2 processors.

The communication with the chipset is using differential HyperTransport 3.0 bus at 3600 Mt/second.

The TDP rating of the Phenom ii N640 is at moderate 35 watts level, suitable for medium and large sizes notebooks. The Phenom ii N640 supports a number of multimedia instructions including SSE4A. The Phenom ii N640 also support the AMD 64 bit instruction set, which will allow you to run the 32 bit code as well as the 64 bit codes for faster execution.

The hardware virtualization supported in Phenom ii N640. The hardware virtualization helps in case you are running two operating systems and you need to switch seamlessly between two operating systems.

We do not find any benchmark score for this processor at the time of writing. We should start seeing some of the benchmark score by early 2011 when notebooks powered by N640 start making their presence felt.

Some of the notebooks we found, powered by N640 include

– HP Pavilion dv7-4178n
– HP Pavilion 16 dv6z

I want to run Cakewalk Music Creator on an AMD Phenom ii X2 N640 dual core processor. The manufacturer of the software specifies 32 bit operating system. Can I run this software on such a machine? Is it possible to install a 32 bit version of windows? Please advise.
