ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 is the new high performance graphics card from AMD for laptops and Notebooks. This is compatible with applications that use DirectX 11 graphics. If you compare ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 it has lesser in clock speed and when compared with the desktop model HD 5770 it is still has a less clock speed. This is most usually configured with DDR3 RAM memory whereas HD 5870 is configured with DDR5 most of the times.

The bus between the graphics processor core and the RAM memory is through two memory buses which are of width 64 bits each. The buses are capable of providing access to memory upto 1 Giga byte for either DDR3 RAM memory or DDR5 RAM memory. But if the RAM memory used is GDDR3 the performance of this graphics card suffers.

AMD claims that the new breed of processor which starts with model number HD5000 is comparatively optimized and has better performance than HD 4000 series. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 also has support for 3D performance but this is heavily dependent on the RAM memory that is used.

The video processor used is called UVD2 which is they claim as an improved video processor. This helps in the acceleration of the High Definition videos. This supports Blu-ray formats as well and also picture in picture. This can simultaneously decode two High Definition video contents. But if the graphics card is configured with a GDDR5 it offers a better performance than with a GDDR3 RAM memory.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 also has the feature of supporting High Definition Audio tracks. It supports both DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby true High Definition also. The power consumption is comparatively greater than its predecessors it consumes around 40 -60 Watts. But performance wise it compensates the power consumption. This is comparative with the desktop graphics card which is Radeon HD 5750, but performance wise and cost effectiveness wise ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 lags way behind its Desktop counterpart. The high power consumption results in draining of the laptop battery in a short time also. This provides a very good Graphics feel for high end games with have multi layered graphics and 3D animations also. Even while watching High resolution videos this gives a rich feel which many other graphics card fails to provide. To put it in a single word it is one of the better graphics card available in the market.

The main advantage of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850, it comes with ATI eye affinity support that means you can attach multiple displays ( upto 6), but your system need to support feature. You need display port that should compatible with ATI eye affinity feature.

Since ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 consumes lot of power, it will be good to see if the laptop is integrated with proper  cooling feature or not. One of the popular notebook containing ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 is HP Envy 17
