Toshiba NB555D-018 Review – 10.1″ netbook with AMD’s C-30

January 25th, 2011 No comments

Toshiba’s NB555D-018 is one of the few notebooks that has come out with AMD’s Ontario, the single core C-30 chip. Toshiba NB555D-018 comes with a small 10.1 inch screen but has pretty much everything to let you do your office works while you are mobile.

Toshiba NB555D-018 comes with 1 GB of RAM and 250 GB of hard disk. Obviously the normal edition of the Windows 7 operating system will not fit in this much of memory. The Toshiba NB555D-018 is preinstalled with the Windows 7 starter edition that has smaller footprint. While this is small and inexpensive ( best buy has it for $329 at the time of writing) netbook, it does come with some notable useful feature, including HDMI output and wifi.

The other notable feature is the long battery life, which according to Toshiba can go upto 10 hours. This is really good for mobile persons who need to keep working and do not need to worry about plugging it to a power chord. This is made possible not only by the AMD’s low power C-30 processor, but also by the LED backlit display which consumes less power.

In general we are not impressed with the netbooks in general ( for $100 to $150 more, you get a full fledged notebook), but if long battery life and mobility is in your mind Toshiba NB555D-018 , is worth considering. What separates it with other netbooks is good graphics performance with its ontario processor and the HDMI output.

Acer Aspire One AOD255E-13608 Review – Netbook

January 16th, 2011 1 comment

The Aspire One AOD255E-13608 from Acer, is yet another netbook in the long series of the Acer’s netbook. All of them have pretty much similar specifications – powered by the intel Atom N455 processor, 10.1 inch screen , 1 GB RAM and 250 GB Hard disk. There is essentially nothing much new in this netbook.

Quick facts at a glance

– Powered by Intel Atom N455 processor – 1.66 GHz, single core, supports hyperthreading
– 10.1 inch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution, the backlight is lit by LED.
– Wired networking with wireless 802.11 b/g/n networking capability.
– 3 USB ports
– Windows 7 starter edition.

Let us take a look at the individual components of the Acer AOD255E-13608.

Processor

You are obviously not expecting a great deal of performance with the single core 1.66 GHz Atom N455 processor. However, this processor will let you do your word processing, surfing and email. It does support Hyperthreading, so it is not too bad for multi processing. But yes, the processor does not stand to wind against the myriad of high performance dual core processors available today from Intel as well as AMD. Especially worth mentioning is the AMD’s zacate E-350 ( a dual core processor, very low power, and great leap in graphics performance).

Memory and Hard disk
The Aspire AOD255E-13608 comes with 250 GB of hard disk and we really have no complaint with the amount of the hard disk itself. However, the 1 GB RAM is really a bit low, and had it not been the started edition of the Windows 7, the OS itself would have taken that space. You will find programs with large memory footprint to be performing sluggishly.

Display
The 10.1″ LCD screen gives out brilliant display with LED backlighting. It has a resolution of 1024 x 600, actually pretty good for the small screen size.

Battery and Battery Life

One of the key aspect of the netbooks is large battery life. You may get close to 4 hours of battery life with the AOD255E-13608 netbook. But we will have to check more AOD255E-13608 reviews before commenting on that.

Acer Aspire One AOD255E-13865 Netbook Review

January 15th, 2011 1 comment

The Acer Aspire One AOD255E-13865 is a 10.1 inch netbook powered by the Intel Atom N455 processor. It is inexpensive, but comes with integrated camera and wifi connectivity option and a decent 250 GB hard disk. Its configuration is pretty much standard for a typical 10.1 inch netbook.

Key Features at a Glance

– Powered by Intel Atom N455

– 10.1 inch screen with LED backlight

– 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Disk Drive

–  1.3 Megapixel Webcam, and 2 USB connectors.

–  Ethernet LAN connector and 802.11b/g/n  wifi

– Four hours of battery life with 3 cell Lithium Ion battery.

The intel Atom N455 processor that powers the Aspire One AOD255E-13865 is single core processor that runs at 1.66 GHz. The Hyperthreading slightly improves the performance of the processor, but, still, you will not be able to use this processor for any high computing environments. The processor should however be decent enough for you home and office computing environment that requires internet browsing, email checking, word and spreadsheet editing.

You will find the 1GB RAM a bit low in case you are working on several programs simultaneously. This is another reason, starredreviews does not recommend the Atom N455 based netbooks in particular. Wait for the price reduction on the AMD’s zacate E-350 based notebooks and you will get a performance netbook under $400.

The webcam and the wifi itself are decent features, though you may find the missing DVD drive annoying. You will not be able to install any program that comes on the DVD drive directly. You will find the USB connector useful for your tasks. The hard disk too, at 250 GB is more than enough for most purpose.

The only plus point about AOD255E-13865 netbook is its low price, and if this is the deciding factor, you may like to go ahead and buy one.
