Compaq CQ62-214NR Notebook

The Compaq CQ62-214NR is an entry level laptop that was available at Staples at a price of less than $350. Yes at at price of under $350 !!! And not only that – we had a rebate of $20 which means that you did not need to wait till the black Friday to buy an inexpensive computer. Once you take into account the rebate, the price goes down to to $329. Of course, you still need to pay the tax upon it. But if you are lucky to be in a state like New Hampshire you can even avoid the sales tax.

So what is inside this lid of the inexpensive notebook.

The compaq CQ62-214NR comes with the entry level Intel Celeron 900 processor. When most of the recent launches of the computer come with at least 2 core, it looks like either intel or the compaq or both had some inventory of this low and processor and/or notebook components that they wanted to get rid of. The Intel Celeron 900 is a single core processor that works at 2.2 GHz. Well this is not a low frequency at all and at that frequency the processor works fast – at least for the single threaded processes.

It is not good to compare this processor with the dual core processors. We will do justice if we compare this processor with the Atom processors. You will notice that this is way faster than the Atom processor. And here is the reason – many netbooks come at prices near $300 to $350 – so you are getting full fledge big notebook at the price of a netbook.

The intel Celeron 900 will make you comfirtable while browsing internet , working on notepad, word and spread sheet. The notebook is however not recommended for developer or gaming enthusiast. If you do need gaming you may like to explore notebooks that has intel core i3 processors or the AMD’s phenom ii triple core and quad core processors.

Compaq CQ62-214NR comes with 2 GB of memory – a little too less, especially if you wish to open several programs simultaneously. However, this is good enough if all you do is browsing the internet and some word and spreadsheet.

The display in Compaq CQ62-214NR is a 16:9 LED aspect ration bright view screen (yes baby it has a big size 15.6 inches). It does come with an HDMI port which lets you see your favorite movie on HDMI enabled HDTV by hooking Compaq CQ62-214NR to your TV with an HDMI cable. Notice that the HDMI cable is not provided with Compaq CQ62-214NR

As usual in all the notebooks wired as well as wireless networking is provided in the Compaq CQ62-214NR. The wireless works like a charm – absolutely no issue – no connection drop while browsing.

Now let us talk about the ports and connections available on the left hand side an the right hand side. Not long ago notebooks used to come with all the connectors on the back side of the notebooks. It was very difficult to access the connectors on the back side. The notebook manufacturers realized that the users appreciate the connectors on the sides of the notebook. And during the last decade we found more notebooks coming with the connectors on the left and right side of the notebook. The Compaq CQ62-214NR is not an exception.

Looking at left hand side we have an ethernet port, two USBs HDMI port, ,a microphone and a headphone, and a multimedia card socket. On the right hand side of the notebook we see a DVD drive and USB socket. Their are a total of 3 USB sockets which is pretty good. The power supply entry is through the upper right corner. Again no insertion from the back side.

Talking about the performance we do not have a great amount of benchmarking data. Fortunately the Widows Experience rating provide a quick look at the performance of this computer.

Windows Experience rating gives Compaq CQ62-214NR a rating of 4.4 for the processor which it defines as Calculations per second. The Windows Experience rating is 5.2 for memory operations per second and 3.6 in graphics (which it defines as Desktop perfprmance with Windows Aero). Windows Experience rating for the Gaming Graphics is 3.3. The hard disk rating is 5.8.

The operating system in Compaq CQ62-214NR is Windows 7 Home premium edition. Many users had positive experience with the Windows 7 operating system unlike the previous generation Windows Vista.

Th Compaq CQ62-214NR comes Norton Anti Virus is preloaded. But it is only trial version for one month after which you will have to pay if you want to continue to be protected with the latest virus and worm threads. It may be a good idea to uninstall the Norton Anti Virus and replace it with free Anti Virus available – like AVG Anti virus. Do not keep both the Anti Virus togather – they will clash with each other and will make the system slow. You may also like to install Spybot Search and Destroy to keep your notebook protected from worms that may come through internet.

A number of Add ons in the browser makes a highly annoying experience. The Add ons reduce the active display area in the internet browser. The fight for the grab on the browsing area real estate leads to poor user satisfaction. You will also find a short cut is for ebay on the desktop. Does HP do it without gatting paid from ebay. It is highly doubted. Probably that is how HP is able to give you a notebook so cheap – and still not able to face bankruptcy. It is best to unistall all the add ons. The question is – do all notebook users have the capability to do it ?

If you have recently purchased a new computer you will find – Java run time update – another annoying piece. Obviously Apple with its cleaner GUI provides much better user experience. But can all the users afford its high price tag.

Many of the unwanted programs include for example – Cyberlink webcam – what is the use of Cyberlink webcam when the notebook does not has an inbuilt camera ? HP makes money out of it ? There are also pandora internet radio, HP Download Store – they just to enrich HP. There is a long list of unwanted programs that you want to remove

Microsoft Livesearch toolbar
PowerDirector
Power2Go
HP Smart Web Printing
Lableprint from CyberLink Corp

Some Concerns and Cons

Processor speed is obviously a cause of concern with Compaq CQ62-214NR . User abviously understand that they are not going to get an fast processor in this price. The left click and the right click is a bit tricky. The two are spaced a bit too far – and it will take you a bit of time before you get used to it. The arrangement of the keys on the keyboards could be another annoying factor. The bottom left key is usually a control key which is used in conjunction with other keys. In the case of Compaq CQ62-214NR the bottom left key it is Calculator key. So every now when you intend to press a Control Key ( like when you try to press Control +C to copy something) you end up seeing a pop up with a calculator. You need to click the x on the calculator – look carefully where the Control key is and retry it. Not a very pleasant experience.

There is no in built camera with this notebook – Obviously we are asking too much for $329.

blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.

I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some
experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything.

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appearance.
I must say you have done a superb job with this. In addition, the blog loads extremely fast for me
    on Firefox. Excellent Blog!
