Some more details of AMD Phenom II X2 555
The biggest reason you would like to but the AMD’s Phenom ii X2 55 is its sub $100 price. The phenom ii, with high clock rate at 3.2 GHz is able to give a run to money to most of the Intel’s low cost moderate performance desktop processors.
Some more details of Core i3-2100
The Core i3-2100 is the second generation Intel Core i3 processor improving significantly upon the architecture that evolved from Arrandale. Although turbo boost is not available in the core i3-2100 ( The newer turbo 2.0 technology, that increases the time for which processor can be in the boosted state, is available only on the second generation core i5 and i7 processors), the processor still shows significant performance improvement over similarly clocked 1st generation core i3 processor. The more significant improvement has been in the area of integrated graphics unit.

While it is true that Phenom ii X2 555 is clocked higher than the core i3-2100, it is still slower than the Phenom ii X2 555.
The only reason I can go for the Phenom ii X2 55 is when I can use it as a drop in replacemennt in my AM3 motherboard.
In a dual core battle, Intel’s entry level Sandy Bridge chip, the Core i3-2100, takes on AMD’s best, the Phenom II X2 565 Black Edition. Find out how they stack up against each another and Intel’s Clarkdale processors. I’ve been reading some posts lately about how core i3 2100 (3.1ghz dual core) can beat a phenom ii 925 (2.8ghz quad core). This may be true. The Sandy Bridge i3′s are stripped down 65W dual core chips with just 3MB of L3 (compared to 6MB/8MB on the i5/i7), slower HD 2000 graphics, and lack the TurboBoost dynamic overclocking feature, but they do have Hyper-threading.
The benchmark score of 3831 Vs 1982 says it all. Intel seems to be winning as of now. Not sure if the AMD’s bulldozer will make a difference.
