Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera Review

November 30th, 2010 No comments

Pioneer brand Flip Video has narrowly led the pocket camcorder market when it has taken a huge leap over the past years. Several other brands are hanging in the middle of competition, such as Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera, which is offering an arguably better design and has made such huge improvements in terms of the video quality. Although the Zi8 model is far from being the perfect choice in this segment, it has got a pretty good offer that is tough to beat for a price of under $200.

One of the areas of improvement for Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera is the design aspect, which looks much slicker than last year’s Zi6 model. It is neither the lightest nor the smallest pocket camcorder in the market today. However, at 2.4 x 4.5 x 0.9 inches in dimension, and an average weight of 4.8 ounces, then it is pretty compact to carry around with you. There are three color choices available in this model: aqua, black, and raspberry. All models are equipped with a 2.5-inch LCD screen on the back wherein you can preview your recordings or view them later on. Aside from the design, it has also been improved to facilitate ease of use such that you can explore more of its features.

Kodak sells a case that you can use to contain Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera, especially when traveling, but don’t expect to find one included in the package when you buy this model. It also requires slimmer lithium ion rechargeable batteries to operate, which you can charge via a flip-out cable or direct from your computer. You can also connect it to a wall outlet using an AC adapter, which is thankfully shipped along with the product.

Don’t expect Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera to offer the same quality of video recordings as HD video camcorders that cost thousands of dollars. However, its image quality is a huge improvement from Zi6, which offers a 6-megapixel picture capture ability and can record videos in 1080p and 30 fps, which are all made possible with its use of a 1/2.5-inch 5-megapixel CMOS sensor. Kodak claims that this pocket camcorder is the best for shooting sports and action subjects that can support up to 720p videos in 30 frames per second.

Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera also disappoints in terms of the memory card as Kodak refuses to include an SD card in the package but instead relying solely on its internal memory. Thankfully, the videos recorded using this device is compatible with various applications since you can record them in MPEG-4 or MOV format.

Pro’s of Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera

*Improved video quality, which can compete with superior brands;

*Still photos aren’t impressive but is better in quality than most camera phones;

*Compact and portable design;

*Ease of use;

*More comprehensive features.

Con’s of Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera

*The body itself is fingerprint magnet, such that you need to constantly wipe it to remove any fingerprints that are left when handling it;

*Aside from fingerprints, it is also susceptible to scratches;

*Limited memory with internal memory capacity.

The Bottom Line

Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera is far from perfect, but if you are going to spend less than $200 on a pocket camcorder then this is the best choice around. You can enjoy great value for your money with the improved video and still photo quality, such that you can enjoy recording great memories during travel or special occasions.

Vivitar Vivicam VX025GH 10.1 MP Digital Camera is a battery-powered digital camera that requires 3 AAA batteries before you can use it. The camera body comes with a dimensional measurement of 8.4 x 5.3 x 1.3 inches and is very lightweight at 0.50 lb. As the name suggests, it is equipped with 10.1 megapixel resolution such that you can preview your subjects or view a slideshow of your captured photos in a 2.4-inch display size.

Since the Vivitar Vivicam VX025GH 10.1 MP Digital Camera does not come with a memory card in the box, you need to rely on its built-in internal memory space if you have not purchased a separate SD memory card to store your photos in. The built-in internal memory available measures at 16MB, which really isn’t that much so it is important to buy a separate memory card if you wanted to capture more photos. The standard image resolution captured with this camera is at 3648 x 2736 pixels. It is also capable of recording video files that are set in MPEG movie format, which is compatible with various applications.

Unfortunately, Vivitar Vivicam VX025GH 10.1 MP Digital Camera does not have optical zoom capacity. However, it does offer up to 8x in digital zoom, which cannot offer the most superior images especially when capturing distant subjects. You will get the Vivitar Experience to go along with the package though for editing your images later on.

Pro’s of Vivitar Vivicam VX025GH 10.1 MP Digital Camera

*It offers an amazing array of video settings for something of its price;

*It is lightweight, which makes it convenient for you to carry around;

*It comes with basic accessories such as USB cable for transferring files from your camera into a computer, a wrist strap, and instruction manual;

*It comes with USB port and supports an SD memory card.

Con’s of Vivitar Vivicam VX025GH 10.1 MP Digital Camera

*It does not have a reliable zooming capacity;

*It does not take rechargeable batteries;

*It does not have a memory card so you need to purchase that separately;

*It is made from plastic so don’t expect it to be very durable;

*Although it comes with the flash, it is delayed which means that your pictures are still dark when captured.

The Bottom Line

If you have limited budget to spare and is looking for a great camera, then you can rely on Vivitar Vivicam VX025GH 10.1 MP Digital Camera to provide the answer to your needs. This battery-powered digital camera is estimated to cost around $50, which is rare to find nowadays. It might not be able to compete with superior lenses and digital camera models, but it can’t be beat at this price point.
