Garmin nuvi 3790T Review

There are few striking features of the nuvi 3790T that sets its apart from the other GPS – its capacitive touch screen and its slim design are two of them.  A quick glance over the pros and cons of the Garmin Nuvi 3790T.

Garmin nuvi 3790T Pros

– Slim design, measures just 0.35  inch in thickness

– Capacitive touch screen that allows you to browse it like on iPhone – zooming, sliding.

– High resolution screen, good in graphics and display.

– Calculates the routes very fast.

– Bluetooth for hands free calling

Garmin nuvi 3790T Cons

– A bit expensive ( $439 at the time of writing)

– There are pop up ads when you receive the traffic information.

The first striking feature of the Garmin nuvi 3790T is its high resolution 800×480 pixel screen. Most screens in the GPS come with a resolution of 480×272 resolution and therefore you are getting a screen which is almost 4 times bigger ( area wise) in the resolution. This results in images that are sharper, crisper and brighter. You will have less problem reading out the screen letters even in bright light.

Another striking feature is the Capacitive touch screen. You are encouraged to read the advantage of the capacitive touch screen over resistive touchscreen to appreciate it. You can pinch in the Garmin nuvi 3790T  to zoom in and out of the map with the help of  two fingers. If you miss a route, nuvi 3790T recalculates it really fast.  Garmin is as always, at its best in its design of the intuitive menus screen navigations.

The Garmin nuvi 3790T Review also has voice recognition whereby you can issue commands to wake up and give commands. Do not expect it to work perfectly, as, it also depends upon your accent.  You may have to practice a bit to make you it works as expected.

The nuvi 3790T does speak out the streets at turns (like Turn left at Main Street). The audio prompt is timed well and loud. It is interesting to note that garmin is able to design audio amplifier in a surprisingly thin package.

The nuvi 3790T has bluetooth which enables hands free calling.

A caution to the buyers – Garmin nuvi 3790T does give you POPUP ADS whenever you are receiving traffic information. The commerical pop ups come something like “Breakfast Red Lobester” or  “Get free dinner with $7 lunch”. The problem with these ads is that they take up screen space. And when it does that, it obscures the map.  These pop ups are supposed to be displayed only while you are stopped. Apparently there is no way you can do anything to stop the ads from being displayed. Garmin Nuvi gets its traffic information from third party (Navteq) and this is beyond their capability to stop the ads.
