Intel Atom N270 processor review
Intel Atom N270 is a single core processor with nominal clock frequency of 1.6 GHz. Intended for low power, thin and small notebooks requiring small to moderate processing power the Atom N270 supports Hyperthreading which helps slightly in multi threaded environment.
Looking at the architecture of the Atom N270 processor, the Atom N270 does not has the integrated memory controller. It communicated with the North Bridge ( which Intel calls Memory Controller Hub) using the front side Bus, FSB. The speed of the Front side Bus is 533 MHz. The Front side Bus communicates with the memory. In other words, there is no integrated memory controller in the processor. The lack of the integrated memory controller slows down the processor to memory communication speed and reduces the overall performance of the processor.
Manufactured with 45 nm technology, the Intel Atom N270 has a TDP rating of 2.5 Watts. The low TDP rating helps in the design of thin notebooks. The Atom N270 does support Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology. The Speedstep technology switches processor core voltage and frequency in tandem between high and low levels in response to change in the processing power requirement.
The Atom N220 fits in PBGA437 socket measuring 2.2 cm x 2.2 cm. The die size is 26 square mm and has 47 million transistors.
Some of the other features of the Atom N270 include support for the multimedia instructions for SSE2, SSE3 and SSSE4. The Atom N270 does not support the Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x).

Obviously the Atom N270 processor has relatively slow performance. Newer ultra low voltage dual core processors have better performance levels.
