The Intel Pentium P6100 and the core i3-370M are both based upon Arrandale architecture. Both are dual core parts and both have 3 MB of L3 Cache memory. And here the similarity ends. The Core i3-370M is a much faster processor, not only because of the higher 2.40 GHz clock frequency Vs 2.0 GHz clock frequency of the Pentium P6100, but also because, the core i3-370M supports the Hyperthreading, which Pentium P6100 does not. The presence of the Hyperthreading further widens the gap between the performance levels in the Core i3-370M and the Pentium P6100 in multi threaded environment.
The reason we took up the two CPUs for comparison, is that these two are the two most popular processors, being used in the recently launched notebooks. The Pentium P6100 based notebooks can be categorized as the entry level notebooks, while the Core i3-370M based notebooks can be classified as the mid performance notebook.
Another subtle difference is the support for virtualization ( Vt-x) in core i3-370M, which is not present in the Pentium P6100 processor. This virtualization technology is useful, in case, if you are running two operating systems in parallel.
Let us take a look at the benchmark numbers.
- The Super Pi 2M takes 50 seconds in Pentium P6100 while it takes only 42 seconds in case of core i3-370M.
- The 3DMark 06 CPU score of the Core i3-370M stands at 2575 as compared to 1838 score of Pentium P6100
- SiSoft Sandra Dhrystone MIPS rating for core i3-370M is 32400 while that of Pentium P6100 is 18250.
Clearly core i3-370M is a much better CPU as compared to the Pentium P6100.
