Intel Core i3 i3-2100 vs Intel Core i3 i3-2100T

The arrival of the Second Generation Core i3 processor heats up the market demand for the processors with decent integrated graphics performance. Intel did not change the core i3 etc nomenclature even when there was significant architecture difference with respect to the earlier architecture.

In this article we will look at the difference in the Core i3-2100 and the Core i3-2100T, both of them belonging to the second generation Intel Sandy Bridge processor.

– The core i3-2100 has a clock frequency of 3100 MHz as compared to 2500 MHz for the core i3-2100T.
– The core i3-2100T is a low power part with a TDP rating of 35 Watts, the Core i3-2100 has TDP rating of 65 Watts.
– The Max temperature rating for t he Core i3-2100T is 65 degree C as compared to 69.1 deg C for the Core i3-2100

In a nutshell, these are different processors, with different processor clock frequency and power rating. The Table below summarizes this difference.

Table : core i3-2100 Vs core i3-2100T

SL. No.
Core i3-2100 Core i3-2100T
Clock Frequency 3100 MHz 2500 MHz
TDP Rating 65 Watts 35 Watts
Max Temperature 69.1 deg C 65 deg C

Performance Difference

Since the clock frequencies of the Core i3-2100 and the core i3-2100T differ by 19.3% ( Calculated using (3100-2500)/3100), we should expect similar performance difference in CPU intensive benchmarking.

The Passmark Score for Core i3-2100 is 3828
The Passmark Score for Core i3-2100T is 3325

This gives a difference of 13.1 % – Not precisely proportional, since passmark gives overall score. Also, even while processor speed may be running differently, the memory communication transfer rate does not differ.

It may be safe to conclude that the Core i3-2100T is slower by an order of 13%. If low power is your priority, Core i3-2100T is preferable ( for example if you are looking for a server to save energy cost).
