Intel Core i3 vs core 2 duo Processor Comparison and Difference
The newer Intel Core i3 processors have significantly enhanced architecture that makes them significantly faster and superior to the similarly clocked earlier core 2 duo processor.
Core i3 vs core 2 duo – The Memory Controller
– The core i3 processor has integrated memory controller, which reduces the processor to memory latency and makes processor to memory communication faster. In the core 2 duo architecture, the processor first communicates with a chip called North Bridge, which in turn communicates with the memory. Since the communication has to go through another chip, it reduces the speed of communication between the processor to memory reduces.
Core i3 vs core 2 duo – The Integrated Graphics Controller
– The core i3 processor comes with an integrated graphics controller. This potentially eleimates the requirement of an external discrete graphics component or graphics card in the system. The performance of the integrated graphics is not very good but decent for entry level games at low resolution.
intel Core i3 vs core 2 duo – Hyperthreading
– The core i3 processors comes with Hyperthreading that is not available in the Core 2 Duo processors. This improves the performance in some of the multithreaded applications.
intel Core i3 vs core 2 duo – Chipset Communication
– The core i3 processor has a fast differential DMI bus which increases the performance when communicating with the peripherals. The core 2 Duo processors communicate through a slower Front Side Bus with a combination of the North and SOuth Bridges. The DMI bus in the Core i3 processor is much faster than the Front Side Bus
intel Core i3 vs core 2 duo – Miscellaneous
The Core i3 may seem to consume slightly more power than the core 2 Duo processors, however, if you calculate the performance per unit of power, core i3 outsmarts the core 2 Duo processors.
The inherent architectural improvements has also led to improved performance of the core i3 processors with respect to core 2 processors. Mentally you can add a performance roughly equal to 500 MHz in the core i3 processors with respect to core 2 processor.
