Intel Core i7-740QM quad core processor

The Intel Core i7-740QM is a four core processor and has a nominal operating frequency of 1.73 GHz.  This is still slow but is faster than the Core i7-720QM which has a nominal operating frequency of 1.6 GHz.

Even though the nominal frequency of the Core i7-740QM is just 1.73 GHz, its turbo frequency is very high – 2.93 GHz. Notice that not all the 4 cores can go in the turbo mode simultaneously. In fact only one of the 4 cores can ramp its frequency to the maximum turbo frequency.

The Hyperthreading is enabled in the  Core i7-740QM  and we can have 8 cores running simultaneously. This is very helpful in the multithreaded environment.

Based on the Clarksfield architecture, the core i7-740QM has a TDP rating of 45 Watts.

The intel Core i7 740QM ( in fact all the 7xxx line processrs)  has   DDR3 integrated memory controller. Intel’s architecture has started looking good after the Clarkfield and the Nehalem processors with the integrated memory controller.

If you thought that the integrated memory controller is not fast enough , the Core i7-740QM also has 6 MB of L3 Cache. If you are looking for a higher cache you may like to take a look at Intel Core i7 820QM with 8 MB of L3 cache.

Benchmarking scores – The Super Pi 2M takes close to 34 seconds with Intel Core i7-740QM. The Windows 7 gives it a score of 7 out of 10.

    Is the Core i7-740QM compatable with Pinnacle 14 Ultimate Collection in all respects.

    does the Intel® Core™ i5-460M has a better performance than the Intel® Core™ i7-740QM?? because runing at 1.73 GHz……???

    Very good question. While it is true that the core i7-740QM has a lower 1.73 GHz frequency as compared to the 2.53 GHz clock frequency of i5-460M, the number of the cores takes precedence here. The only way to check is to see the benchmark numbers. The Super Pi 2M calculation takes 33.8 seconds in the case of core i7-740QM while it takes 37.7 seconds in the case of the i5-460M. The Super Pi is a predominantly single threaded application. We should expect even more performance difference in multi threaded environment. The 3D Mark06 CPU score is 3350 for the core i7-740QM while 2907 for the core i5-460M.

    That does not mean that i7-740QM is necessarily a better choice. The i5-460M based notebooks are being offered at $1K range, while you may be able to get one with i5-460M under $700. In that case it will also depend upon if you are willing pay that extra for the increased performance.
