Kodak EasyShare C195 Review

The Kodak EasyShare C195 is one of the few decent cameras under $80.  The price noted on Walmart as well as Amazon were both $79 at the time of writing.  Buying online Vs in store is a matter of personal choice.  My personal preference is buying at store unless buying online promises a substantial price advantage.

Kodak EasyShare C195 digital camera comes with 5X optical Zoom in 35mm format and 5X advanced digital zoom that covers a focal range of  35mm to 165mm. Most of the cameras in this price range come with only 3x optical zoom and while we can not regard it as suitable for professional wide-angle photography, it is certainly decent enough.

The sensor of Easyshare C195 is CCDs sensor and is 1/ 2.3 inches in size which is generally common for all digital compact camera or point to shoot camera.

Do you know ?

A higher megapixel does not necessarily translate into a better camera. The Image sensor size is more important parameter to look for when buying a camera – Read the Megapixel Myth and the importance of Camera Sensor Size.

The camera comes with 14 megapixels ( effective), however sensor consist of 14.5 megapixels

Now some concerns – The Camera takes in AA battery. Whether you use Alkaline batteries or the rechargeable one is upto you. The Alkaline one drains fast and it cost money every time you go to buy them. But these are ubiquitous and cheap. A big note – you will need to buy a set of the AA chargeable batteries and the charger.

Another concern – the camera does not come with memory card – as do most of the point and shoot camera. So be prepared to buy a 2 GB SD Card ( 4 GB will be better if you plan to use it a lot for Videos).

Kodak C195 digital camera comes with image stabilization for still photography, so you don’t have to worry blurring of photo due to camera shake.

The ISO sensitivity of EasyShare C195 ranges from 64-400 when set to Auto while one can manually set it up to 1000.

The camera comes with white balance as well.

Kodak EasyShare C195 equipped with  3 inch LCD screen, can shoot videos in VGA format  at 640 × 480 and with speed of  30fps. Incase of video there is only digital zoom no optical zoom. While recording video you will not get image stabilization feature unlike still photography.

The shutter speed  range include from ¼- 1/4000 th second so you can shoot  still object to moving object  even a bird flying in a sky, however lens specs and aperture is also comes as an important factor.

It can record still photography in JPEG/EXIF v2.21

When comes to storage  Kodak Easyshare C195 comes with 32MB internal memory. The memory is offered in SD/SDHC card expansion slot

Finally, Kodak EasyShare C195  is 14 effective megapixels  camera 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor and has  5X optical zoom .

Do you know ?

A higher megapixel does not necessarily translate into a better camera. The Image sensor size is more important parameter to look for when buying a camera – Read the Megapixel Myth and the importance of Camera Sensor Size.

It is affordable camera with good optical zoom. The dimension and weight are pocket-friendly as well that is 3.8 × 2.4 × 1.2 in. and 177g including battery and card.

The optical zoom of EasyShare C195 provides 35-165mm in 35mm film formats. The display on the back side of the camera is pretty well with 3-inches at a resolution of 230k pixels. Kodak’s scene/subjecting recognizing Smart Capture technology and one-touch Share button  which Kodak highlight more than anything  is very useful for uploading pictures to social networking sites and also video shootings.

The C195 Digital camera comes with preinstalled scene settings which ranges from portraits to landscapes, including fireworks, snow, beach and baby modes, self portrait, sports, panorama. The camera is  good for beginner as well. So we can conclude that at $79  is not a bad deal.

After checking and comparing cameras of Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Fuzi, Sony – I decided to purchase Kodak c195 model. Now it’s features are stunning on paper and with a very much affordable price.
After purchasing I have used it rigorously in different condition and with different camera settings. To tell you the truth , all the pictures are quite stunning in it’s smart capture mode. Except maybe in very low light situation. Here it sometimes fails to identify the perfect ISO settings and the pictures will be darker than you intended to capture. This can be overcome by using manual ISO settings. With manual ISO settings of 400 , the pictures in low light will be perfect without any noise.
The software of the camera and usability is perfect. The direct function buttons are well positioned. The 3 inch screen is awesome in representing the images.
Certainly a camera to go for. Perfect for beginners to intermediate level users without few knowledge of photography. There is no other camera in this price range that can compete with it. Go for it. It certainly has a Five Star Rating.

  7. James Neal says:

Just returned C195 for refund bought a few days ago. Took about 7 pics and the batteries that came with it went dead. Put in two more alkaline batteries, and they went out as well in similar usage. Is this common for this model? I have a Model Z650 and have never, never had this problem with it. Comments?

  8. Len buck says:

  9. Antonio says:

The C195 is by far the best camera I have ever owned under $100. The photos come out GREAT!!! The only thing I wish it could do is work as a webcam also. Maybe that will be added in the next design. Bravo Kodak !!!

  10. Dave says:

The batteries that come with it do not last long at all. Get some good quality rechargeable AA batteries, charge them, and you’ll have no problem with the battery issue. At least I haven’t.

  11. Scott says:

yes it does. That is pretty much a standard feature anymore.

    @James Neal
I bought my C195 a week before Christmas. The standard alkaline batteries that came with it did not last very long. Maybe 1 day at the most. I have some rechargeable NiMH batteries which I used in my old HP digital camera, and in the Kodak C195 they last about a week. I found that lithium batteries last considerably longer both in my HP and the C195 which replaced the HP. They have been in use for 2 weeks taking many holiday photos and the battery indicator still shows a full charge. I swear by NiMH batteries. They last much longer and don’t lose a lot of power in cold climate conditions. Check the extended user guide. There are settings you can use to save battery power.

I received this camera as a gift and love it. It is and upgrade from the 7.0 mgp Kodak I already had..I recommend getting rechargeable batteries as with larger mega pixels it uses more battery. I get a lot of life out of the rechargeables. I have however run into a problem getting my videos off the camera. I cant figure out that little glitch yet but I am working on it. also when I put the memory stick in my computer I could not get it to open. There is help offered at the kodak site. Overall I absolutely love my new camera and look forward to capturing some great memories.

Try rechargeable batteries. They save money and I feel they just last longer. More mega pixels = more battery usage. The quality of the photo is well worth it I think.

  16. Dawn Mills says:

My computer would not read my 4G memory stick when plugged directly into the computer. This was because it is a SDHC card and is not compatible with my somewhat older computer. Any computer made before 2007 will not be compatible. I was able to transfer all pics and videos directly from the camera though. I recommend getting just a SD card or try getting an external reader that is more up to date (have found these as cheep as $10.00)Hope this helps as I have spent hours trying to troubleshoot this problem. I still love this camera and the quality of pics it takes.

  17. David Brown says:

Does the C195 print the date on the photos?

  18. Toronto says:

    @Dawn Mills

Dawn – you can get a very inexpensive SD-USB adaptor (typically $2 to $5 at a discount electronics store.) You put your SD or SDHC card in it, and plug it into a USB port on your computer, and it comes up as a “disk drive” . Then you can view your photos directly (or copy them to your hard drive, edit them, etc) without using your camera or draining its batteries. Highly recommended.

  19. Jaymie P. says:

does anyone know how to set the different colors on the camera? like black and white photos? or sepia?

  20. Lynda says:

The cord that you need comes with the camera and hooks into the computer. You must first download the kodak software to the computer for the computer to recognize th camera and download the photos for you.
