Practice Words for GRE and GMAT Vocabulary

A good way to enhance your vocabulary is by reading books and jotting down the words that you do not know.

Here are 10 words taken from the book Running on Full by Tina Sharma Tiwary

1. Trundle

As noun trundle most commonly means

1. A wheel or roller usually a small one.
2. The action of motion or rollingh especially with noise.

As a verb Trundle means

1. To push on wheels or rollers
2. Two twirl or Spin
3. To move along by or as if by rolling or spinning.

Example – The dust danced on the road every time a vehicle trundled past, settling down sluggishly.

2. Wilt

- To loose strength, To droop, to become limp or flaccid.

Examples

1. The plants wilted as there was no rain this year in Rajasthan.
2. I stood in heat, wilting at the bus stopon the main road, that ran perpandicular to the lane of our colony.

3. Chiffon

- A sik fabric or rayon
- A fine cloth, especially transparent one.

Example

- She turned to the opposite direction, her red chiffon sari fluttering in the wind

4. Dreary
- Bleak, Dismal,boring, dull

We were standing at a bust stop in a dreary suburb if the capital, wating for a rickety overloaded bus.

5. Rickety

- Shaky, like to break apart, likely to collapse.

Example

6. Fickle

- Characterized by erratic changeableness or instability, capricious.

Example

Electricity and water supply played fickle games and dusty by-lanes were a reality we lived and played by.

7. snotty

- Dirtied with nasal mucus

Example

I turned my attention to an ugly snotty boy draped over his mother’s shoulder

8. resplendent

- brilliant, Splendid or dazzling in appearance;

My resplendent jacket golden jacket had made the atmosphere electric.

9. umbrage

- resentment, Offense

I did not take particular umbrage to it, even when he ignored talking to me.

10. Confetti

- Small pieces or streamers of colored paper that are scattered around during the course of festive occasions

Confetti covers the floor on the birthday celebration every year..
