As part of the Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJ review, we present you the key features of the notebook, that will help you gauge the suitability of this notebook for your requirement.

– Intel core i3-380M, dual core processor, 3.53 GHz 2.53 GHz ( Thanks Nick Azure for pointing the typo), 3 MB L3 Cache
– 4 MB DDR3 RAM and 500 GB Hard Disk
– 15.5 inch screen powered by Intel HD graphics
– HDMI output
– DVD writer
– Wired and wireless networking
– 4 USB 2.0 Ports, one eSATA port
– VGA out, microphone and Audio Out jacks
– Integrated Webcam

Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJ comes with everything that you will expect in a home and office computing. The only potential drawback is that this notebook will not be suitable for high end computing and playing high end games at highest resolution.

Let us take a closer look at the individual components of the Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJ in detail.

Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJ is powered by Intel core i3-380M processor. The core i3-380 a dual core processor, which runs at 3.53 GHz and comes with 3 MB of L3 cache (intel calls it Smart Cache). Its Integrated memory controller and the support for the Hyperthreading makes its performance decent. The core i3-380M, however, does not support Turbo boost feature, that increases the performance by increasing the clock frequency for a short duration. If you are looking for higher performance computing machine you may like to take a look at core i5 and core i7 based notebooks that have turbo boost enabled.

RAM and Hard Disk

Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJcomes with 4 GB of RAM and 500 GB of hard disk.

The Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJ comes with 15.5 inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768. It is driven by Intel HD graphics engine. If you are a common notebook user, who does not play high end games ( 90% of the users fall in this category), you should be perfectly fine with the display quality. For the rest 10% who need to play high end games, you may like to search for something better, with higher end discrete graphics. The Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJ also comes with HDMI connector that you can use to display the contents on an HDTV or any device that supports HDMI input.

Other Features

You will find Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJ equipped with other features that most notebooks today come with. It has webcam that you can use for video chat. The four USB 2.0 connectors can be used to hook any USB device. The eSATA port is useful for any external hard drive that can be hooked to this notebook.

Bottom Line

The Sony Vaio VPCEB42FX/BJ is priced at $699 according to the MSRP. This is a price commensurate to its performance. If you are looking for a lower cost, you may like to check the AMD’s Athlon ii P340 and the Intel’s Pentium P6200 based machines. Toshiba Satellite 650 Series also has some competitive machines that come for $50 or so less (Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5160 for example). But Sony has established itself as a quality manufacturer and Toshiba probably ranks just behind these.

I would like to point a few things out that were erroneous/missed:

There are 3 dedicated USB ports, the “4th” is actually an eSATA/USB combo port. There is also an ExpressCard/34 slot located near the eSATA port that can be used to house compatible devices such as USB hubs. Also, the clock speed of the Intel Core i3 380M was mis-labelled at 3.53ghz; the real frequency is 2.53ghz.
