Acer Travelmate 8172T Notebook Review

August 22nd, 2010

Acer recently released its Travelmate 8172T Notebooks in UK and Germany and has small 11.6″ LCD screen. The Acer Travelmate 8172T features intel core i3-330UM processor which has a core frequency of 1.2 GHz.  Obviously you are not expecting a high performance level  with this notebook.  The Windows 7 Experience Index rates this processor at 4.2  on the scale of 10.  The core i3-330UM processor should not be confused with the core i3-330M processor which is a 2.13 GHz part and higher power rating.

However, the low power consumption, helps increased battery life. The TDP of this processor is 18 Watts and you will not feel the heat when you work on it on your laps. The core i3-330UM processors have intrgrated graphics controller.

The notebook is also equipped with 4 GHz of memory although, the variation in the configuration can be expected depending upon your choice and configuration.

Weight and dimensions
Acer Travelmate 8172T weighs 1350 g which is just under 3 lb ( for the readers in United States who are more accustomed to the pound as the measure of the weight.) The dimensions of Acer Travelmate 8172T is 285 (W) x 206 (D) x 29 (H) mm. The small size and the low weight makes this notebook and ideal for travel.

Accessories and Ports

As far as the accessories are concerned, the Acer Travelmate 8172T has 3 USB 2.0, a Gigabit Ethernet port as well as wireless LAN – standard feature in most  of the notebooks that come now a days.  The Acer Travelmate 8172T
also has  multi-card reader, VGA, webcam  and audio port.

You may find it annoying that there is no optical drive in the Acer Travelmate 8172T Notebook. Many people still use the DVD drive to load many of their programmes, especially if their network connections are slow. So  this may be the biggest reason, why you don not want to buy this notebook. The small screen size could be another.

An HDMI port is not available. So do not expect to see HDMI video directly on this notebook. The notebook does has the Easyport IV docking  which may potentially extend some more ports. However, the users may find it distasteful to pay more for adding some docking station to the notebook.

Battery and Battery life

There are three different types of the battery with which the Acer Travelmate 8172T can be configured. The 3-cell battery has a storage capacity of 24 Watt Hour. In layman terms a 24 Watt hour means that if your notebook is taking 24 Watts of power then it will last for 1 hour.

The other two configurations of the battery are a 6-cell battery with 48 Watt hour yet another – again a 6-cell battery with a capacity of 63 Wh.

Acer Travelmate 8172T Pros

- Low power, high battery life

- Small and light – good mobility

Acer Travelmate 8172T Cons

- No optical port

- No HDMI
