Toshiba Satellite L655-S5153 is a 15.6 inch notebook powered by the Intel Pentium dual core P6200 ( 2.13 GHz) processor. The notebook is competitively priced at $549 according to the Toshiba website. The Toshiba Satellite L655-S5153 is exactly the same as the Toshiba Satellite L655-S5156, except that it does not has the HDMI output. It is therefore slightly cheaper than the Toshiba Satellite L655-S5156 which is priced at $579 – $30 more than the S5153 model. If you do not plan to use this notebook for displaying the content on the LCD TV or the projector using HDMI, you way like to choose this model and save $30.

Key Specifications
– Intel Pentium P6200 processor ( dual core 2.13 GHz, dual core, 3 MB Cache)
– 4 Giga Byte RAM
– 320GB Hard Drive
– 15.6″ LCD Screen
– 2 USB 2.0 port

Some descriptio description of the individual components.

The Processor

The Pentium P6200, that powers the Satellite L655-S5153 is dual processor at clock frequency of 2.13 GHz. Based upon the Arrandale architecture Pentium P6200 the processor inherits exotic properties of the core i3 and core i5 processors. It has 3 MB of L3 Cache and most importantly it has an integrated memory controller, similar to the core i3 processors. The Pentium P6200, however, does not support hyperthreading. The processor is slightly stripped down version of the core i3 processor. You should still get some decent performance out of it.

RAM and Hard Disk

Beyond a certain point increasing the amount of the RAM does not increase the performance much ( except for special cases when several programs with large memory footprints are running in parallel. The 4 GB RAM in the Satellite L655-S5153 should give you enough room for even larger programs. The Hard disk comes with 320 GB.

Display

The Satellite’s 15.6″ screen gives out bright screen with good quality display. It has 1366×768 resolution and the backlight is lit by LED. The Satellite L655-S5153 however, does not come with HDMI connector.

Connectivity and Other Feature
The Satellite L655-S5153 comes with wired and wireless connectivity features. It has 2 USB 2.0 port and a USB/eSata combo port. The webcam and the microphone is built into the LCD bezel at the top center. It does have a DVD writer that you can use to watch movie or burn DVDs.

Bottom Line
Starredreviews believe that the notebook itself is decent. It has everything to make up a decent entry level machine for home and office computing. If you are looking for higher processing power you may like to take a look at some of the core i5 based machines. Even some of the core i3-370M ( or even better core i3-380M) based machines, that have slightly better performance should be available in around the same price. If you can get this machine in under $500 it should be a decent deal. Otherwise, you may have some other good optoins.
