Q. Will AMD’s Bulldozer processor work on the AM3 based motherboard.
According to the information available, the bulldozer processor requires AM3+ based motherboard. Motherboard manufacturers including ASUS has readied the AMD’s 8 Series based motherboards.
According to ASUS the existing AM3 based motherboards may also work for the latest processors
Here is what Asus says
Current owners of an AM3-based board* will make their AMD 8-Series motherboards compatible with the latest AM3+ CPUs with a simple BIOS** update from the official ASUS website.

MSI is also providing similar support for its AM3 motherboards. The existing motherboard will require the BIOS update

I think a newer AM3+ motherboard will be a better choice rather than upgrading BIOS on AM3 board. The reason – the newer motherboard will have latest chipset and will support higher memory clock rate. The new motherboards will also likely support the HyperTransport 3.1 which older may not. In other words the AM3+ motherboard will be faster…just my 2 cents.
The AM3+ motheboards will be expensive, but the investment may be worth. I will go with the AM3+ motherboards.
