Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Zihuatanejo, Mexico is a small fishing village and 15 minutes from the city of Ixtapa. It is the fourth-largest city in the Mexican state of Guerrero and belongs to a section of the Mexican Pacific coast known as the Costa Grande. Zihuatanejo is located on a well-protected bay that is popular with private boat owners in the winter.

Zihuatanejo has spent most of its history as a sleepy fishing village until recently. These areas of Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa are the third most visited area in Mexico. In addition, it is the most popular area for sports fishermen. Since the 1970’s it has been developed in conjunction with Ixtapa, but managing to maintain its traditional Mexican feel.


The waterfront walkway is the heart of Zihuatanejo. This tree-lined walkway for pedestrians goes along the municipal beach between the archeological museum and fishing pier. A long the walkway you will find restaurants offering seafood and many other dishes, and a variety of stores selling rugs, arts and crafts, souvenirs. There is also a shell market. Some of the best-known restaurants that you will find on the walkway sell seafood, Mexican and pasta dishes.

Instead of a traditional plaza, the center is a basketball court right in front of the beach. It is surrounded by shade trees, benches, a gazebo, and the Casa de la Cultura. Many tourists use this as a point of reference. The craft market has 250 shops, which sell a wide array of crafts. You can also purchase local work done with seashells, snail shells, and coral. There are also items made from the silver in Taxco and bark paper paintings from the central valley region of Oaxaca.

The town center does have it own beach, but due to its proximity to the port, it is not recommended for swimming. There is constant maritime traffic in this part of the bay. Most of the international tourism comes between November and December. While there, you can sit on the beach and whale and dolphin watch.

For lodging, you can find economical lodging that offers tourist just a place to lay their heads and is looking for a bargain, hotels that offer more, and luxury hotels and inns. If sports fishing are, why you come to Zihuatanejo there is a special lodge just for you. It is called Bahia La Tortuga Fishing Lodge. You can even rent a luxury yacht to take you for a nice ride around the area or take you deep sea fishing.
